As many of you know, I believe that a Do Good Things lifestyle can be embraced by many actions – big or small. With that context, about 6 years ago I planted a very tiny blueberry bush in a very prominent spot in my front garden. What’s notable is that the front garden is actually a flower garden, leaving some to wonder why in earth would I place a one off fruit bush in that spot? I’ll tell you why, and it’s for one very good reason. My younger son Jeremy just LOVES his blueberries, and so in his honor, I came upon a tiny blueberry plant for sale. I think it was $2, but I put it into the ground and year after year, I watch it grow, bloom, and smile.
When I first did the planting, Jeremy was still in high school. Now he’s finished with college, and living away from home. However my blueberry bush feels more like a tree to me – as it has grown taller than I am. Instead of 5 or 6 precious tiny blueberries, this modest blueberry tree now yields over 100 blueberries. I make sure that I go out daily to check on it, say hello, and encourage it go continue to grow and prosper.
What’s the point? Sometimes some small Do Good Things action – such as planting a blueberry bush – in honor of someone else, can provide endless joy, for both the person that you are honoring AND for yourself.
